Deciding Snowboard Stance

Deciding what stance you are:

  • Regular footed stance is with the left foot in front and the right foot in back.
  • Goofy footed stance is with the right foot in front and the left foot in back.

There are many different ways to determine your stance on the board. In my lessons I ask the beginners if they have ever wakeboarded, skateboarded, or slalom skied before. I do this because each of these sports has one foot in front and one in the back.

If they say they have then 99% of the time that same stance carries over to snowboarding.

If they say they haven’t, then I ask which foot they plant when kicking a ball. The foot they plant is the one in front and the one they kick with is in back.

Usually people have a regular stance, so if unsure try a regular footed stance first then switch to see which is more comfortable.
